Caterpillar is a leading company active in the production and distribution of tractors and other products in the agricultural industry.
Caterpillar was founded in California thanks to Benjamin Holt, who engineered a tractor trying to solve some of steam tractors limits - like their heaviness.
In 1919 the company grew and Holt opened up a plant in Peoria, Illinois. This company was led by his nephew Pliny Holt and on 28 August 1909 he purchased an empty factory for the production of traction engine and farm implements. Even if this can be considered the founding date of the company, Pliny Holt didn't trademark the name Caterpillar until 1910.
The success of the company has lead them two year later to export tractors in Argentina, Canada and Mexico.
However, the company that is operative today was founded in 1925, when C.L. Best and Holt Caterpillar merged to form the Caterpillar tractor.
At the beginning the plants were settled in Stockton and Peoria and the headquarter in Peoria. Only on 31 January 2017 the headquarter was moved to Chicago.
